Video of the Week: Assorted Rides | Devon Howard

Video of the Week: Assorted Rides | Devon Howard 1920 1080 Ventura Surf Club

“Assorted Rides” is comprised of a few sessions in California where I met up with a surfer I’ve really enjoyed watching over the years. Devon Howard’s approach to surfing inspired the feel of this short—a modern classic. In preparation for this project, I pored over old surf photograpahy books with works by guys like LeRoy Grannis and Ron Stoner. They are photographers that captured moments and told stories through the use of dramatic backlighting and color accents compressed through a manual focus telephoto lens that—when complimented by the grain of film—produced a timeless image. My hope is the short film does two things: 1.) Makes you want to go surfing right now! 2.) To record a moment in time which represents what I think is Devon’s best surfing to date, at age 46 no less.

And if curious about what’s going on under his feet, here’s what Devon had to say about the boards and the type of surfing we filmed:

“After a few decades of goofing off in the surf, I’ve whittled down what I ride most into two distinct camps—both of which are an obvious extension of the waves, culture and characters where I’ve lived all these years. For the cruisey, under shoulder high days (which there are many), I find classic style single-fin longboards (9’9 to 10’) with a ’66 Australian bent are hard to beat. When conditions finally push shoulder high on up to double overhead, my plan shapes dip down a few feet to a range of mostly egg-inspired outlines (6’10 – 7’2”), and the rails, bottom contours and fin set-ups take on a much more revved up form.

I dig how these two design groupings allow an easy transition from one to the next (thank you low rocker and generous volume), but offer discernible shifts in speed, accessibility to different parts of the wave, and maximize the available space on the face. This film short by Florida’s Drew Miller captures the back and forth pacing between long and mid sized equipment, the decisions for which are primarily driven by equal parts attitude and surf conditions.

There is absolutely nothing new here in terms of a “horses for courses” approach (thank you Nat Young, Skip Frye, etc), but although well into my mid 40s, I’m still passionate about learning what works, what doesn’t, then plugging that back into the never ending design loop. The stoke for staying on the surf prowl explains why the boards and the ride itself just keeps getting better.”

Thank you for watching,

Drew Miller

We needed this. With the hangover of isolation still throbbing in our heads, we called the crew and stacked the sleds – it was time to escape the postcode! Responsibly, of course! With a troopy full of boards we hit the Pacific Motorway south from Byron. A few calls to some friends along the East Coast and we had our route planned – hitting the South Coast and back in just over a week surfing our quiver in rain, gale or shine.

Video of the Week: Psychic Migrations 1280 638 Ventura Surf Club

Over a year and a half in the making and featuring a cast of surfing’s most capable and compelling characters, anticipation is peaking for the release of Volcom Stone’s latest feature surf film, Psychic Migrations. Following 2014’s True To This, a surf-skate-snow epic, the forthcoming Psychic Migrations is yet another inspired Veeco Production that builds on more than 20 years and 30 influential films from the world of Volcom. Directed by veteran surf filmmaker Ryan Thomas and shot on location in the West Indies, East Indies, Australia, Polynesia, and the Americas, the film weaves the physical expression of riding a rousing score of waves with a cerebral odyssey through the scapes and textures travelled to find them.

Starring: Dusty Payne, Mitch Coleborn, Yago Dora, Nate Tyler, Carlos Muñoz, Ryan Burch, Andrew Doheny, Parker Coffin, Alex Gray, Balaram Stack, Mike Gleason, Miguel Tudela, Joan Duru, Imai Devault, Tom Dosland, Gavin Beschen, Ozzie Wright and Kelly Slater

All the beaches are closed. Painting, shaping and our families were keeping us sane. Days go by… we wait. We wait and wait for just one beach to open up. We find a beach and its open! The line up is empty of tourist which is rare this day and age. Just us and it’s Like a dream. We spot a man pull up on his scooter. Wearing all black, not a beach goer at all. He was a scout taking photos of us. The next day it was closed. The orders come from the top. Orders coming from people we can’t argue with.

A couple of weeks go by and we hear rumours of a spot that had just re opened. The guards who patrolled the area weren’t paid the fee they were promised and decided to open it up for us. They too are surfers of that zone.

A swell pops up and we go to the spot. The spot is beautiful. A fierce and intimidating wave with strong current and backwash. Unpredictable, Shallow and very unforgiving at times. Many waves were make able and some waves tricking us into believing they were make able. Like a Venus fly trap, it would lure us inside and close us in. Most importantly, This was a legal wave, where nobody would whistle us out or flatten our tyres. A legal wave that gave us a taste of what we have been deprived of for the past 3 months.
